Five St. Vincent-St. Mary High School wrestlers advanced to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division 2 State Wrestling tournament this coming weekend by finishing in the top four in their respective weight classes at the Alliance Division 2 District Tournament on Saturday.  We will have a State Send Off Assembly for our wrestlers this Wednesday, 3/7 at 8:00am in the Arena.

The Irish were led by District Champ Luke Wymer who won his fourth career district championship to go along with his fourth career sectional title the week before.  While still checking the records it is believed the Wymer is the first and only Irish wrestler to win 4 career sectional and 4 career district titles.  Wymer will take a 40-9 season record down to Columbus.

Wymer was joined in the finals by Ed Suber at 132# and David Heath at 182#.   In the 132# final Suber lost to Jordan Decatur of CVCA who is ranked 5th nationally at 132#.  David Heath lost to David Crawford of Canfield.   Suber will take a 24-4 record to Columbus and Heath will take a 37-9 record to the state tournament.

The other Irish wrestlers who placed and qualified for Columbus were Jake Potok at 145# who finished 4th, and David Johnson who suffered his first loss of the season by a 5-1 score to nationally ranked Kevon Freeman of Lake Catholic in the 160# semifinal match.  Johnson came back to win 2 matches, one by pin and one by major decision to finish 3rd.  Potok is currently 26-7 while Johnson is 13-1.

Hunter Olson finished 5th at the district tournament and will be an alternate at 126# at the state tournament.  Olson has a season record of 37-12.

Wrestling starts at 3 PM on Thursday, and continues with sessions at 10 AM and 6:30 PM on Friday and at 10 AM and 5:30 PM on Saturday.  Quarterfinals will start at 10:30 AM Friday with semifinals at 6:30 PM Friday.   The 3rd, 5th, and 7th place matches will start at 11 AM Saturday and the championship finals will start at 5:45 PM Saturday.
