After taking a year and a half off of swimming Drew Vereecken was anxious to get back into competitive swimming when he entered high school. After visiting several schools during his high school decision making process, he felt “most at home” at STVM. With no high school swim team, Drew thought he would have to sacrifice the swimming, but was excited to learn about the option to transfer his athletic eligibility to his public district option. In Drew’s case it was Harvey S Firestone CLC which has a long tradition of swimming excellence. Upon entering the pool again, Drew knew he had some ground to make up, but after months of 6AM and 3PM practices, including 2-a-days over Christmas break, his times started to steadily improve, and he had a very successful swim season.
Last weekend, Drew was invited to swim 3 events at the JV championship at Canton McKinley High School . Drew took 2nd place in his 100m freestyle heat with a time of 58.54 being beat out of 1st place by a mere 0.13 seconds. He also took podium spots with his relay teams in a the 4 x 50 yard relay and 4 x 100 yard relay with split times of 27.4 and 58.00.
Drew is looking forward to this weekend where he is slated to swim in the 500 yard freestyle in the state sectionals swim meet.
